Before you reach out, here are some answers

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you are asking that question, it probably is. Therapy is not only for people in crisis. It is for anyone who wants to understand themselves better, work through something that feels stuck, or simply have a dedicated space to process life. You do not need to be at a breaking point to benefit from therapy.

Does insurance cover psychotherapy in Ontario?

Many extended health benefit plans and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist. The coverage amount varies by plan. Check with your insurance provider before your first session to understand what you are entitled to. Shimul can provide receipts formatted for insurance submission.

What is the difference between a psychotherapist and a psychologist?

Both are regulated mental health professionals in Ontario. Psychologists typically have doctoral-level training and can provide psychological assessments and diagnoses. Registered Psychotherapists are regulated by CRPO and specialize in therapeutic treatment. For most people seeking talk therapy and emotional support, a Registered Psychotherapist is an excellent, and often more accessible, choice.

How long does therapy typically take?

There is no single answer. Some people find that six to ten sessions gives them what they need. Others benefit from longer-term ongoing support. The timeline depends entirely on your goals, the nature of what you are working through, and the pace that feels right for you. Shimul will revisit this with you regularly throughout your work together.

Is everything I say completely confidential?

Yes, with a small number of legally required exceptions. Shimul is bound by CRPO ethical guidelines and Ontario privacy law to maintain strict confidentiality. The only exceptions are situations where there is imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or where disclosure is required by court order. These exceptions will be explained clearly in your intake documents.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Life happens. Shimul simply asks for a minimum of 24 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice may be subject to the full session fee. This policy exists to respect the time of both Shimul and other clients who may need that appointment slot.

Common questions answered

Here are the questions Shimul hears most often from people considering reaching out for the first time.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you are asking this question, it is probably already a sign. Therapy is not only for people in crisis. It is for anyone who feels stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or who simply wants to understand themselves better. You do not need to be at a breaking point to benefit from a compassionate, professional conversation about your life.

Does insurance cover psychotherapy?

Many extended health benefit plans and Employee Assistance Programs cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist. OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy. We recommend checking with your insurance provider directly before your first session. Shimul provides properly formatted receipts for insurance submission after each session.

What is the cancellation policy?

A minimum of 24 hours notice is required for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice may be subject to the full session fee. Life happens and exceptions are handled with understanding, but this policy exists to respect the time of both Shimul and other clients who may need the appointment slot.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes. Shimul is bound by CRPO ethical guidelines and Ontario privacy law to maintain strict confidentiality. The only exceptions involve imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or a court order. All exceptions will be explained clearly in your intake documents. Your privacy and sense of safety are foundational to the work.

How long does it take to get a response?

Shimul personally reads every message and typically responds within one to two business days. If your matter is urgent or you are in distress, please contact a crisis line or your local emergency services rather than waiting for a reply. For general inquiries and bookings, you can expect a thoughtful, personal response promptly.

What happens after I send a message?

Shimul will review your message and respond with a brief, warm reply. If you are interested in booking, she will either confirm a free 15-minute consultation time directly or direct you to her online booking system. From there, you are entirely in control of the pace. No pressure, no obligation, just an open door.
